Sam is helping me live up to my Korean nickname "Cope-ah-knee" |
Halloween Weekend – we expected to spend the holiday in style – dressing up in costumes, acquiring tons of candy, and having a ton of fun. The only problems with this plan were that is that costumes are a bit hard to come by in Korea (I can’t even find clothes to buy, let alone costumes to buy) and candy gifts are a bit scarce. But fun, that was easy to get!
P.S. Get ready for a TON of pictures
The week started off with Sam buying our costumes. She bought liquid latex online so that we would have something for a costume for the party Saturday night (she was planning on making her signature death wounds). Our friends were having a Halloween party. That was the good news. The bad news – they have a cat (for me, not so bad news, but for Sam, very bad news). But, the plan was to check it out. But wait…the party is Saturday night! What will we do for the rest of the weekend? After a quick discussion it was decided – Saturday Afternoon Amusement Park! We made the plans and things were set. But again, we had a problem….what to do on Friday night? Thursday evening the problem was solved! At the rock gym, Sam and I were invited to go out to eat with all the other climbers.

Sam and Jea Hyun had matching
shoes and chap sticks, which in Korea,
makes them a couple. |
Friday night rolls around and we all meet at the gym. The car trip is about 30 minutes, made a little long with all the stops to pick up other dinner guests. We drive far far far and finally make it to a little restaurant to eat lots raw fish and drink a little. Super good! Then, after dinner it was second round. Time to eat a little raw LIVE shrimp and drink a lot! This round, lots of silly antics and lots of silly pictures. At one point, someone even had a drill gun (don’t know why!) After second round, most people went home. But not us! Third round was back in Pohang – this time just fried chicken – if we could even eat any more. We were stuffed!

Courtney got a nice picture with half of the people we had dinner with. |

Sam got a bit of a strange picture with the other half. Yes..that is toilet paper on his head. |
Saturday morning we woke up with smiles on our faces! Why? Because it was theme park day! Sam,

Group theme-park picture! I don't know what Geoff is doing. |
Brandon, and I met at the train station and headed to Daegu. When we arrived, the Yeongcheoners and we headed to the park! It was pretty awesome I’d have to say. The rides were terrifying, the lines were short, and it wasn’t raining. I’d say a perfect day! There was one ride we noticed as we walked through the gate, and hereafter we referred to it as the Circle of Death. You sit on a bench, in a circle, and hold on tight. It’s the equivalent of a mechanical bull ride, except there is no bull, you are on a bench, and there is no soft place to land. You better hold on tight. Of course we all said “No way!” We continued through the park, riding rides, visiting aquariums, petting puppies in the petting zoo, floating in giant bubbles on water, and riding roller coasters. At the end, we saw the circle of death. We were still cowering in fear? I THINK NOT! We conquered that thing like an iceberg conquered the Titanic! How? By using only one hand to keep us in place. That’s right, we are that tough. I, of course, would have been safe just using one finger and standing on my tiptoes, but I didn’t want the others to feel bad. Anyway, the circle of death was so much fun that we went twice (of course, to get everyone to agree it took a bit more peer pressure than the first time). But, our one handed tricks were shown to be obsolete on the second round when a tiny tiny little girl waved both her hands in the air.

After the park we were able to get giant massive amazing hamburgers! Yes, it was sooo good. Cheeseburgers and French fries – the perfect dinner. Of course, there was no time to eat so we got it to go and ran for the train station. But, when we missed the train home did we get upset? No, because we still had hamburgers to eat. When we realized that the nearby bus terminal was not the correct one, did we cry? No, because we had hamburgers in little to go bags. When the taxi driver took us to the wrong bus terminal, did we get angry and scream? No, because we still had those hamburgers nearby! When we ran to the correct bus terminal just in time and were able to get aboard the correct bus, did we shout and scream with joy? No, because we were too busy stuffing our faces with hamburgers.
When we got home, it was Halloween party time. But, unfortunately for the Halloween party, Sam and I were tired, plus she is allergic to cats. We both went home and crashed!
The next morning, I woke up at 5am. What? Why? Because I was going to the mountains! That was another reason I went home last night, because I had a mountain to climb on Sunday! Our friend DongHoon invited me to go up to Seorak
Mountain, and I agreed! His mother and father are in a hiking club and their club was making a trip up there. So, for the small fee of 25,000 (or 25$) I would get a bus ride up, hike all day, and come back home! Of course, the penalty was to wake up at 5am, but it was worth it. I had wanted to go to this mountain for quite a while. It’s supposed to be the most beautiful one in Korea. The leaves are just about done changing colors so it was perfect timing. The bus ride was 4 hours, the hike was 3-4 hours, and the bus ride home was another 4 hours. The weather could have been better, but that was ok. It was still great. A little rain and clouds never hurt me!
Though there weren’t many Halloween activities participated in by us, we still had an amazing weekend. And we still have tons and tons of liquid latex left over, because we never did go to any Halloween parties.
P.S. If you want to see an awesome video of our climbing adventure last week, our friend Jonny put one on his blog.
